Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was launched in March 2020. In this, every person is given 5 kg of food grains per month. Since this scheme is brought for the poor, only families having BPL card can get benefits under it. So far 6 phases of this scheme have been completed. The first phase was from April- June 2020. The subsequent phases are as follows - July - November 2020, May - June 2021, July - November 2021, December - March 2022 and March - September 2022.

Last time when this scheme was extended from September to December, a total additional expenditure of Rs 44,762 crore was incurred on the extension of this scheme till December 2022. At the same time, till now Rs 3.46 lakh crore has been spent on this scheme. On the other hand, if this scheme is extended till March 2023, then about 68 lakh tonnes more wheat will be required. Experts say that the government can continue PMGKAY till the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Can get extension till March 2023

The government launched the scheme of 5 kg free food grains every month under the National Food Security Act for 80 crore people in April 2020. Under this scheme, the government has spent Rs 3.9 lakh crore in different phases. It is believed that after December it will be extended again till March 2023. For this scheme, the government can add 40 thousand crores in the subsidy bill. Although the government has a bigger challenge than the financial budget to meet the requirement of wheat. If we look at the wheat stock, the government has so much of it that it can continue the food security for the poor for the next three more months. According to the government, by January 2023, they will have a stock of about 159 lakh tonnes of wheat. If the government extends the Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till March 2023, then between January and March 2023, 68 lakh tonnes more wheat would be required. That means the government will have about 91 lakh tonnes of wheat in stock instead of 75 lakh tonnes. Till the arrival of the new crop, the government has enough food grains to run the food scheme.

759 lakh metric tonnes of food grains allocated for 80 crore beneficiaries

As you all know, in March 2020, the Prime Minister's Poor Welfare Package was announced by the Government of India. Under this package, additional and free food grains were distributed to 80 crore National Fertilizer Security Act beneficiaries through Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. The scheme was launched with an aim to provide food security to the needy citizens to face the economic constraints caused by the pandemic. Through this scheme, the amount of monthly food that was normally distributed to Antyodaya Yojana and priority families was doubled.

From the first phase to the fifth phase of this scheme, 759 lakh metric tonnes of food grains have been allocated to the States and Union Territories to distribute food grains to about 80 crore NFSA beneficiaries. This is equivalent to about Rs 2.6 lakh crore in food grain subsidy. So far around 580 lakh metric tonnes of food grains have been distributed to the beneficiaries.

Extension of the scheme done by the Delhi government

New insurance cover for Corona Warriors under PMGKY

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana was launched by the Central Government on 26 March 2020 keeping the poor in mind during the Corona epidemic, under which various facilities were provided to the people of the country. But during the announcement made on Monday, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has claimed to settle the existing claims of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana by 24 April 2021 so that new covers can be created for Corona Warriors. The Ministry tweeted regarding Corona Warriors that the insurance cover available under PMGKY will be disposed of by April 24, 2021 and a fresh disbursement will be provided to Corona Warriors immediately thereafter.

  •      Insurance cover up to ₹ 5000000 will be provided to the warriors in the new cover by insurance companies including the ministry.

  •      Simultaneously, it was told by tweeting by the ministry that for this new insurance cover, the ministry has talked to the insurance companies.

  •      The main objective of providing this cover is to boost the morale of the COVID-19 warriors who have played a vital role during this pandemic.

The Prime Minister of our country, Narendra Modi, is preparing to start the third phase of the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana by taking forward the incentive assistance under this scheme, under this scheme to deal with the financial problems caused by the corona virus.
